What more could you ask for from a Market ?

Its difficult to have realistic expectations when you have put a lot of effort into getting a stall together for a Market. Thats why I’ve decided to ” Tell it how it is ” so to speak. Every week I see new stall holders come and go. Why ? Because they stay one week and expect to sell out. Thats not the case with any market. Even the busiest markets have their days when its quieter than usual or they get browsers rather than buyers.
If you sell a product that is a nessessity then people will come back every week if the product is of good quality. Items that are classed as luxury items take more effort. You might sell nothing today and sell lots the next week. People mightn’t need your items every week but will come back as long as your there.
Picture yourself opening a shop in town. Paying wages, rent, rates and all the other costs of fitting out a shop. Then when you open you don’t get the custom you expected. What do you do? Do you close up shop again? No. You market your shop and stock goods that your customers want to buy. So , If you are at the market and you only pay a small fee on rent , take every opportunity to improve you little business. Interact with cutomers especially when its quiet and try and get feedback. Set up a facebook page for extra promotion and start a competition.

There are lots of ways to make your stall a success , it all just takes a bit of time and effort.

My name is Lynda Cantwell and I live in clonmel with my husband and four children. After my fourth baby was born nearly two years ago, I found it very hard to go to work as I no longer had the flexibility that I needed to juggle a job and run a home. In saying that i couldnt sit at home either . I always dreamt of being my own boss and working my own hours! So in jan 2010 i came up with the idea to start my own baby gift business. I went to my Local Enterprise Board and took part in a course to get me started. My biggest challenge was whether to go and rent a shop, as it is so expensive and a big risk to take. So I spent the next few months researching and trying to come up with different ideas. It wasn’t until April 2010 , whilst reading the South Tipp Today newspaper that it all came together. I spotted a feature , advertising a new market that was starting in Clonmel for new business , food and crafts people.Instantly I thought it would be the perfect place to test the water and see how my business would go. So , on the 8th august 2010 itsy bitsy baby was born! I started out with a small range of babywear and 2 nappy cakes. I was unsure of how nappy cakes would sell in Clonmel as they are such a big thing in America and at the time were almost unheard of in ireland. Im pleased to say they were a big hit at the market and word quickly got around. By my third week I had a wide range of nappy cakes for sale. I now have telephone orders coming regulary and in january I launched my own website. I feel that I have finally found the job of my dreams where I can work around my family. I have been trading at clonmel market for 8 months now and wish it every success in the future. A lot of hard work has gone into making the market what it is today and i would strongly encourage people to support this lovely market.

Over 40 Stalls and a car park full of cars was the scene last Sunday 27th at The Clonmel Market. Over three weeks work went into organising the first ever fair and I can gladly say it was a success. Traders traveled from Callan, Enniscorthy,Waterford and all around Tipperary to sell their wares and they were very happy with the turnout.
For the kids we had a bouncy castle and a face painter. The Boho Kitchen did a cookie decorating class at 12 and it was a lovely site to see the kids walk away with their creations.
By half eleven that morning we had more people in through the market that we would of had on a january sunday , so as you can imagine we were really excited to see how the day was going to turn out. At 4.45 I had to tell people we were closed which was the first time I had ever done that. The bread stall was sold out bar one loaf by half two. Some people though sold nothing but got great exposure, some people sold lots. During the day I was getting bookings for the stallholders next day of selling at the Clonmel Market and it came to me that the day had been a success. When I came home that evening people had left lovely messages for me with congratulations and it was humbling.
Cllr. Tom Hayes made a visit and seem impressed and we were delighted with the support. It means so much to us as we are trying so hard to make it work each week. So the result is we will be having one Craft & Food Fair on the last Sunday of every month. If you cant wait we will also be here every Sunday from 11am to 4pm.

It has been only two weeks since the idea of holding a craft & food fair first came to mind and already we are fully booked with stalls.

It is great to see the growing interest from potential traders and visitors alike, with numerous calls and emails everyday.

The new business ideas that people have been approaching me with are really refereshing. For example, we have a nail technician booked for the craft fair, and a complimentary therapist too. It will the first time that I have seen these professions at a fair and I think its brilliant that people are thinking outside of the box. People are not afraid to try every available opportunity to show off their business in a new way because they believe in their business .

We also be having a live demonstration on-site during the day, which will be a first for us. Jenny from a local company, The Sweetest Thing, will be showing you how to dress cakes and cupcakes. I’m delighted to have Jenny on board because its so very important to support local business.

Over the next two weeks you will see me banging on the doors of every advertising outlet in Tipperary, Waterford , Kilkenny and surrounding areas. I want this Craft & Food Fair to be a successful event and for it continue every year, and of course it gives us a perfect opportunity to showcase the weekly Clonmel Market for what it is, one of County Tipperary’s hidden gems.

Clonmel Market’s inaugural Craft & Food Fair will be held on Sunday 27th March at Dudley’s Mills, Clonmel.

Thinking back about Sunday I couldn’t bring together anything positive to write. The stalls were quiet and so were the customers. To top it all off the weather was utterly miserable and it rained all day.

It was only today (Tuesday) that I really sat down to think through Sunday’s market from all angles, and not just dwell on the negative aspects of the day. It slowly dawned on me that there were many very good points to the day too.

McCarthy’s Hot Dogs were parked outside and, even though they didnt sell as much as they wanted, he got an invitation to a very popular mid-week event that would help him reach new customers, in addition to making him extra money for that week.
Tracey at Cre8tive Glass got an order enquiry about making up some butterflies for a wedding. If that works out it will be great for cre8tive glass.
The Boho Kitchen received several cake orders and that boosted her day.

Considering the weather, there was small but steady trickle of customers throughout the day. Thank you to everyone who braved the weather.

Another top highlight from the day had to be coming home to read a highly supportive comment we received on our Facebook page from SeanGallagher, a dragon from RTE1′s Dragon’s Den, wishing us well. That message really boosted our day and motivated us all to make the next week better :)

Hmmmm…how best can I describe today’s market?
That is the question!

It was a day of busy spurts and very quiet silences. For some traders it was their best ever day, yet for others, their worst so far. It was in-between kind of day, with ups and downs.

We had the very welcome return of three stalls that had been before which is always a good sign that we’re doing something right.

The first was Ali’s Handbags and she was the first to sell early in the morning .
We had French Wonderfood back, with a larger selection of food – including toffee applesa and French bread. They had put a lot of effort into their stall, and it all looked fabulous and very tasty.
The last to return was Cottage Bakes. Marion sells homemade fresh brown bread and a wide range of scones. She did so well today, that she has decided to become a regular every Sunday , which is very pleasing.

We also had a new stall – Receptions Party Shop. Suzan had a large & colourful range of helium balloons, cards and unique gifts for Valentine’s Day.
Whilst I was standing outside I witnessed a teenage couple coming out with a big balloon that he had bought for his girlfriend. She looked over the moon and it was so very sweet.

So what have I learned for next week?
Get more stalls in, basically.
I will be hard on the trail of new stalls this week, from foodies to crafters. We have so much to offer and I really do feel that if we keep our heads up, as we are doing, then The Clonmel Market will be a real success this summer :)
